How to remove leather smell from leather

HOW TO REMOVE THE SMELL FROM LEATHER?

Sometimes, leather or tanned skin items give off a slightly unpleasant smell that can even be annoying. It is usually present in our home because it is used to make numerous objects: jackets, backpacks, bags, belts, furniture covers or even sofas. Additionally, it can take a long time for the smell to disappear, especially if it is new.

But don't worry, this has a simple solution. We will explain some tips on how to remove the smell of leather. However, it is important to note that not all types of leather can be cleaned in the same way, since depending on how it has been treated we could even damage it.

Leather is colloquially called "skin" because it is neither more nor less than the treated and tanned skin of animals.

TRICK Nº 1 - VENTILATE OUTDOORS

The simplest and cheapest trick you can use to remove the smell of leather is to let it air dry for 2 – 3 days. Make sure it is not exposed to direct sunlight, especially in summer, because the sun can ruin the color. It is also very important to make sure that it is not going to rain that day, as water can permanently damage this material.

TRICK Nº 2 - COFFEE TO REMOVE THE LEATHER SMELL

A very simple way to remove the smell of leather is by using coffee. It is better that they are coffee beans and not ground coffee, otherwise the skin could be stained. The process would be the following:

- Insert the leather object and add the coffee beans. A handful is enough.

- Close the bag with a knot or tightly so that no air enters.

- Shake the bag so that the coffee is distributed throughout the article.

- Leave it for at least 24 hours. Open the bag and take it out.

- Then, let it air out for a few hours.

- Once this entire process has passed, both the smell of leather and the smell of coffee will have disappeared.

- Take a plastic bag that does not have holes.

TRICK Nº 3 - USE DRY BAKING CARBONATE

Baking soda powder, in addition to being very useful in cleaning the home and as a remedy for various conditions of the digestive system, is one of the best odor absorbers. For this reason, it is also widely used when eliminating the smell of leather.

Put the leather item inside a cardboard box and cover it with the baking powder. Leave it for about 5 days and then shake off all the baking soda. Important, do not use water to rinse it as it could damage the skin.

TRICK Nº 4 - PROFESSIONAL CLEANER

If all the previous methods have not been effective, you can always resort to the professional products that are for sale. These are sprays or dry creams that once applied. You can find these products in any supermarket and are preferable to other clothing cleaning products because they do not need to be rinsed. In addition to eliminating the odor, the leather cleaner serves to repair and preserve the material as the first day.

TRICK Nº 5 - HOW TO REMOVE THE SMELL FROM SYNTHETIC LEATHER

When the leather is synthetic, that is, fake or artificial leather, we can wash the product without problem with liquid components, since the leather should not be damaged.

If your leather is synthetic, you can remove the smell in several ways:

Washing it in the washing machine

Wash it by hand

Wipe it with a damp cloth

Washing it in the washing machine . Generally, when the leather is synthetic, washing it will be enough for the bad smell to disappear. Use the delicate cycle and set it to cold water mode, so the material does not shrink or lose its shape. Use detergent for colored clothes, it is less aggressive.

• Wash it by hand : You can also wash it by hand in a bucket of warm or cold water with a little hand wash detergent and stir gently.

• Wipe it with a damp cloth if you think your synthetic garment is delicate or you are afraid to use the previous methods. You can use a little soap and gently rub it over the fake leather garment.
